Mr. Dutta specializes in commercial and securities litigation, employment, municipal, appellate, election, and general corporate and corporate governance law, as well as wills and trusts.  He has represented multinational companies as well as individuals on matters relating to commercial and contract negotiations and disputes, company formation, mergers and acquisitions, regulatory tax issues, and Department of Labor audits and appeals.  Mr. Dutta frequently litigates on behalf of his clients before federal and state courts.

With specialized expertise in election and public entity law, Mr. Dutta advises candidates, citizens groups, and nonprofits on matters related to the election process.  He has drafted ballot measures and litigated matters involving state and local government entities.

Mr. Dutta was an Enforcement Attorney for the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission in Washington, DC for several years. After clerking for a federal judge, the Honorable Gladys Kessler in Washington, DC, Mr. Dutta joined the Los Angeles firm of Buchalter Nemer as a commercial litigator. He went on to serve as Tax Counsel at the California Board of Equalization under then Chair John Chiang.

Throughout his career, Mr. Dutta has played a prominent role as attorney and advocate at the state and local levels.  As Deputy Director of the Political Reform Program at the New America Foundation, Mr. Dutta drafted bills and spearheaded legislative strategy for bills in both the California Senate and Assembly.  He proved skillful in persuading city councils and the general public to examine alternative electoral systems (including Ranked Choice Voting and Proportional Representation).

Mr. Dutta has served as a Commissioner on the Los Angeles Industrial Development Authority, as a Board Member of the ACLU of Northern California, and as a Board Member and long-time Executive Director of Asian American Action Fund, a national political organization.

A prolific writer and political commentator, Mr. Dutta has been featured and quoted in the San Francisco Chronicle, Sacramento Bee, San Jose Mercury News, Boston Globe, Associated Press, Los Angeles Daily News, Orange County Register, Huffington Post, Politico, and Asian American Action Fund Blog (of which he is Publisher).
